  5. Troubleshooting Audio CODECS in Windows 95
  6.  
  7. Missing CODECS 
  8.  
  9. Windows 95 includes 32-bit versions of several common CODECS. These 
  10. 32-bit CODECS are installed by default during Windows 95 Setup when 
  11. a sound card is installed in the computer, and are used by multimedia 
  12. programs even if a 16-bit version of the same codec is available. 
  13.  
  14. To verify that the 32-bit CODECS included with Windows 95 are 
  15. installed, follow these steps: 
  16.  
  17.  1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs. 
  18.  2. Click the Windows Setup tab. 
  19.  3. Click Multimedia, and then click Details. 
  20.  4. Verify that the Audio Compression check box is selected. If it 
  21.     is not selected, click the check box to select it, and then click 
  22.     OK.

  24. PhoneFree uses the following 32-bit CODECS included with Windows 95: 
  25.  
  26. DSP Group Truespeech Software 
  27. Microsoft Groupe Special Mobile (GSM) 6.10 
  28.  
  29. You can verify that these codecs are installed by following these 
  30. steps: 
  31.  
  32.  1. In Control Panel, double-click Multimedia. 
  33.  2. Click the Advanced tab. 
  34.  3. Double-click the Audio Compression CODECS branch to expand it. 
  35.  
  36. If the codec used to compress the file is not listed, install that 
  37. codec using the Add New Hardware tool in Control Panel. To do so, 
  38. follow these steps: 
  39.  
  40.  1. In Control Panel, double-click Add New Hardware. 
  41.  2. Click Next, click No, and then click Next. 
  42.  3. Click Sound, Video, And Game Controllers, and then click Next. 
  43.  4. To install the GSM 6.10 CODEC, click Microsoft Audio CODECS in the 
  44.     Manufacturers box, and then click the GSM entry in the Models box. 
  45.     To install the DSP Group Truespeech Software codec, click DSP Group 
  46.     in the Manufacturers box, and then click TrueSpeech(TM) Software
  47.     CODEC in the Models box. 
  48.  5. Click Next, and then click Finish. 
  49.  
  50. Disabled or Damaged CODECS 
  51.  
  52. If you still cannot play a particular .wav file after verifying that the 
  53. codec used to compress the file is installed, the codec may be disabled 
  54. or damaged. To verify that a particular codec is enabled, follow these 
  55. steps: 
  56.  
  57.  1. In Control Panel, double-click Multimedia. 
  58.  2. Click the Advanced tab. 
  59.  3. Double-click the Audio Compression CODECS branch to expand it. 
  60.  4. Click the codec used to compress the file that you are attempting 
  61.     to play, and then click Properties. 
  62.  5. Verify that the Use This Audio Codec option is selected. 
  63.  
  64. To ensure that you are not using a damaged codec, follow these steps to 
  65. reinstall a codec: 
  66.  
  67. 1. In Control Panel, double-click Multimedia.
  68. 2. Click the Advanced tab.
  69. 3. Double-click the Audio Compression CODECS branch to expand it.
  70. 4. Click the codec used to compress the file that you are attempting to
  71.    play, and then click Properties.
  72. 5. Click Remove, and then click Yes.
  73. 6. Restart your computer.
  74. 7. In Control Panel, double-click Add New Hardware.
  75. 8. Click Next, click No, and then click Next.
  76. 9. Click Sound, Video, And Game Controllers, and then click Next.

  78. Install the codec used to compress the file that you are attempting to
  79. play. To install the GSM 6.10 CODEC, click Microsoft Audio CODECS 
  80. in the Manufacturers  box, and then click the GSM entry in the Models
  81. box. To install the DSP Group Truespeech Software codec, click DSP
  82. Group in the Manufacturers box, and then click TrueSpeech(TM) Software
  83. CODEC in the Models box.

  85. Click Next, and then click Finish.

  87. Conflicts Between 16-Bit and 32-Bit CODECS 
  88.  
  89. If the 32-bit version of an audio codec that Windows 95 needs to play 
  90. a particular .wav file is not installed or is disabled, Windows 95 uses 
  91. the 16-bit version of the codec if it is available. If the 32-bit version 
  92. of the codec is installed, Windows 95 uses this version by default. However, 
  93. you may experience problems when both the 16-bit and 32-bit versions of a 
  94. particular codec are installed.

  96. The following 16-bit audio CODECS are installed by the run-time versions of 
  97. Microsoft Video for Windows, Microsoft Windows Sound System, and many other 
  98. Microsoft multimedia programs: 
  99.  
  100. Microsoft ADPCM 
  101. Microsoft IMA ADPCM 
  102. DSP Group Truespeech Software 
  103.  
  104. These 16-bit CODECS appear in the [Drivers] section of the System.ini file, 
  105. but do not appear when you double-click the Multimedia icon in Control Panel, 
  106. click the Advanced tab, and then expand the Audio Compression CODECS branch 
  107. of the Multimedia Drivers tree. To disable a 16-bit codec, remark or remove 
  108. the line in the System.ini file that corresponds to that codec. After disabling 
  109. the 16-bit version of the codec, you should reinstall the 32-bit version using 
  110. the steps described in the "Disabled or Damaged CODECS" section above.

  112. The following lines in the System.ini file correspond to the 16-bit versions of 
  113. the Microsoft ADPCM, Microsoft IMA ADPCM, and DSP Group Truespeech Software CODECS, 
  114. respectively:

  116. [Drivers]
  117. msacm.msadpcm=msadpcm.acm
  118. msacm.imaadpcm=imaadpcm.acm
  119. msacm.trspch=ts_soft.acm
  120.  
  121. If you are using a 16-bit program in Windows 95, you may want to disable the 
  122. 32-bit version of a particular codec, instead of disabling the 16-bit version. 
  123. To do so, follow these steps: 
  124.  
  125.  1. In Control Panel, double-click Multimedia. 
  126.  2. Click the Advanced tab. 
  127.  3. Double-click the Audio Compression CODECS branch to expand it. 
  128.  4. Click the codec you want to disable, and then click Properties. 
  129.  5. Click the Do Not Use This Audio Codec option to select it. 
  130.  6. Click OK.
